Chimney Crown Repair: Protecting Your Chimney from Florida Rain

What Is a Chimney Crown?
The crown is the concrete or mortar slab on top of your chimney. It slopes outward to direct water away from the flue and the masonry beneath. A healthy crown is a complete waterproof shield.
Why Crowns Crack in Orlando
Daily temperature swings, UV exposure, and heavy summer downpours all stress the crown. Hairline cracks form within a few years, and once water gets in, freeze-thaw isn't even necessary: pure moisture cycling does the damage.
Signs of Crown Damage
Visible cracks on top of the chimney, missing chunks of concrete, water leaking down the flue, or rust on the damper below all point to crown failure. A drone or rooftop inspection confirms it.
The Crown Repair Process
For minor cracks, a flexible elastomeric crown sealer bridges the gaps and waterproofs the surface. For major damage, the old crown is removed and a new sloped concrete crown is built with proper overhang and drip edge, then sealed.
A cracked crown can soak your entire chimney, and with Central Florida's summer rains, it's not a question of if, but when, that happens.
